THE YEAR 2004/05 IN REVIEW

New York, NY
On Wednesday, October 13th, 2004, Ice Theatre of New York paid tribute to Company Founder/Director, Moira North and Company members past and present. Moira has been a driving force in the development of figure skating as a performing art, distinguishing it from competitive skating and/or purely commercial entertainment. She has stayed in the vanguard of her art for more than two decades. Because of her astonishing vision (incorporating classical and contemporary dance into the world of figure skating) and her unwavering tenacity, Moira and Company have in fact created a whole new and exciting genre of performing art. In 2003, for the second time, Moira was named one of the twenty-five most influential names in figure skating by International Figure Skating Magazine

The Gala evening began with a performance by the Ice Theatre Ensemble at 7:00 p.m. at Sky Rink, Chelsea Piers, 23rd Street & the Hudson River, NYC. Cocktails, dinner, and celebrations at The Lighthouse Event Center at Pier 61, Chelsea Piers, followed the performance. The short performance previewed the recently commissioned duet “Twist” for Ice Theatre by New York dance choreographer, David Parsons, as well as Prima ballerina/principal skater, Katherine Healy’s second commissioned work, a class piece entitled “Cracked Ice; Douglas Webster’s moving piece, “Departures”, skated to the music of Gustav Mahler, was reset for this occasion. Former Ice Theatre skater, Gia Guddat, returned to Sky Rink to perform her unique, acrobatic “4 Skates”, performed with skates on both hands and feet. Former Olympic champion, Oksana Baiul also skated at the Gala to honor the Company’s 20 years.

The 20th anniversary Gala was a huge success and clearly illustrated the vast flow of support that Moira has garnered over these 20 years.

Congratulations Moira and Company – past and present!
