Ice Theatre Skater on her Debut Performance in France

Colette House

The rink is quiet. Nobody is practicing yet, but the members of Ice Theatre assemble outside and prepare to take the ice for rehearsal. This is my favorite part – looking out over the satin smooth surface during this quiet serene time.  It’s then when, despite empty seats, the air is filled with all the anticipation any show business or arts-related performance offers.  That’s what just the beginning of my experience was like on the January, 2009 French tour with Ice Theatre in New York.

Then the lights come up, we make our final preparations, we lace up our skates and it’s show time with all the upbeat selections this skating ensemble performs.  Ensemble skating holds the all-for-one/one-for-all experience that is a welcome change from the rigors of competitive skating.  It’s fun to be able to focus on the performing aspect of a routine, rather than the point value of all the elements.

The best part about working with Ice Theatre for me began long before it was time to perform.  It was the week of rehearsals in Sun Valley last summer. Where else can a skater enjoy rehearsing under the sun with a great group of people? The cast is completely relaxed with one another and we are all part for Ice Theatre for the same reason- for the love of skating and performing. Skaters’ abilities are enhanced by the kind of skating that Ice Theatre brings to the sport. Being a part of Ice Theatre is a way to develop artistic skills as well as to perfect the technical skills skating requires.  I’m very glad to be a part of it.
